After seeing alot of people posting thier sketches and sketchbooks and realising that I haven’t been drawing nearly as much as I used to or would like to and is something that is pretty important to my creative and general mental well being. I gathered the materials and decided to make myself a very tome like one.. and it is.. it measures 1.5 inches or so in thickness and is a5 (15cmx21cm) it contains 18 sections which is sewn together with 9 holes using robin colored 4ply linen thread.
Unfortunately I didn’t have suffcient amounts of my 5mm book board left so it is made with 2mm for the cover, which is fine just not as beefy and tome like as I was after, the key and corner tabs are from a 7gypsies pack which also has a set of 2 hinges another key and a lock/knob panel, though they didn’t really suit this book so have been left off. I used 3 different shades of ribbon from my stash with brass chainmail rings at the bottom , it means I can add a charm/trinket to is as time goes by.. Inside are 180 pages if i use them singulary or 360 if I double side (which I do sometimes).
The paper is just 110gsm paper left over from my drawing unit. Alot of A1 pieces which I folded and hand tore down to an a4 sheet then folded and voila a great deal of hole punching and sewing later I have a gorgeous new sketchbook that I am looking forward to using (even as a weapon if someone breaks in :P). I feel that the previous task of creating a postcard a day along with the book has made me realise just how important it is to be able to sit there and doodle something and have that in the book to be perused and used later on in some project that may call for it. I have a great love of books and very much dislike buying sketchbooks as they lack the mental stigma to me that it doesn’t matter if the pages inside aren’t fine works. It is my mental junk yard.
The actual act of making my sketchbook is very important to me. I think if I had the time and materials I would mix my own paints/ inks/ glues but these days the consistancy of store brought and the time that is freed up from missing my own is perhaps a little more attractive at this point. So here is a little peek at what it looks like..
And the first little sketch this morning to wake myself up..
I hope you are all having a great start to your week..
